Caldicott Guardian

Everyone in Whitby Group Practice is bound by good practice rules which protect all the information we hold and what can be shared. All NHS organisations have a named person who is responsible for ensuring that practice is upheld, and that person is the Caldicott Guardian. Whitby Group Practice's Caldicott Guardian is Dr Johnson.

Your Medical Records

The practice uses EMIS computer software for your GP electronic medical records. We also have paper copies of your records securely stored. The version of EMIS that we currently use means that your GP electronic medical records are held entirely within Whitby Group Practice.

The Access to Health Records Act 1990 gives you the right to request the information that we hold about your health. We will comly with the requirements of the act. There may be a charge for this information. More details can be found on the Department of Health's website by clicking here.

Confidentiality

Everyone in Whitby Group Practice understands the importance of confidentiality and we have policies in place to ensure that clinical information we hold about you is not shared with people who should not have access to that information.

The Data Protection Act

Because we hold personal information about individuals, the practice is registered with the Data Protection Authority and we have fulfilled the requirements of the Data Protection Act 1998.

The NHS Summary Care Record

Whitby Group Practice supports the principles behind NHS Summary Care Records but our practice is not yet part of it.

The NHS summary care record has been in the news recently. We think that the priniciple of other health care organisations (such as emergency services and hospitals) having access to key medical information, including allergies and medication, could improve your care if you need to use these other health care organisations, especially out of hours, when those organisations can't just phone us up to get the information they may need.

However, we also recognise that safeguards must be in place to protect your confidential information.

At this time, Whitby Group Practice patient information is NOT held on the NHS Summary Care Records because our clinical software does not share your data. This information will not be shared in the future without your consent, and you have the right to opt out of the NHS Summary Care Record if you wish. If you inform us that you wish to opt out we will put a code in your medical records to stop your information being shared if and when Whitby Group Practice patient information are uploaded to the NHS Summary Care Records.
