GP Specialist Trainees
The full time GP specialist trainees are at the Practice 4½ days a week and attend the half day GP registrars' course on Wednesday afternoon at Scarborough. Our specialist trainees usually come to us for 6 months or a year as part of their 3 year Vocational Training Scheme, which also includes 18 months of relevant hospital posts.
A GP registrar is a fully qualified doctor who is gaining further experience in general practice. As such, registrars are competent to see any patients on their own, but they do always have a partner available for advice if required. They also do a share in the out of hours service provided by the Practice.
As part of their training, specialist trainees are required to video consultations for teaching and assessment purposes. You may be asked to have your consultation videoed. If it is, the video will be kept confidential and erased after it has been used. You may decline to have your consultation videoed and this will not affect your care.

FY2 Doctors
FY2 (2nd Year Foundation) doctors are fully registered with the General Medical Council and complete a 4 month attachment in General Practice as part of their postgraduate experience before they continue their postgraduate training in the specialty of their choice. FY2 doctors do not necessarily become GPs.
Medical Students
Whitby Group Practice is a teaching partner of the Hull York Medical School.
The practice is regularly visited by medical students as a vital part of their undergraduate course. As part of their learning, it is obviously important that they see all aspects of what we do here at Whitby, including seeing patients. Patients are always informed if a medical student will be sitting in with the doctor, and most are perfectly happy with this. There are a few occasions when patients would not wish a medical student to be present, and the patient simply informs the receptionist if this is the case.
Locums
The practice makes use of locums to cover Partners' absence when duties, such as primary care trust duties or GP training work (including course organising) takes them away from the practice.
It is our policy to only employ suitably qualified locum doctors. Usually they are known to us, and a number have previously been trainees in the Practice.
