Whitby Hospital
Whitby Hospital is a community hospital and the partners of Whitby Group Practice are actively involved in providing the day to day medical cover for many of the services provided, including:
Some services are provided by all partners;
-
Minor Injuries Unit (casualty)
-
In patients; GP beds and also Palliative Care beds in the Heather Unit.
Partners with special interests and skills provide certain, more specialised, services as either Clinical Assistants or Hospital Practitioners
-
Anaesthetics - the contract for anaesthetics ends March 2012
-
Ophthalmology out-patients
-
Carpal tunnel service
Other local practices also provide medical input to Whitby Hospital.
Our patients can be seen by consultants visiting from the local NHS trusts of both Scarborough and Middlesborough at Whitby Hospital out-patients.
Patients can have a number of radiological investigations at Whitby Hospital.
Changes to medical cover at Whitby Hospital effective November 2004
-
The full range of services outlined above is provided by partners during the in-hours period.
-
When local doctors were responsible for their own GP out of hours (that is, until the end of October 2004) we were able to cover the hospital around the clock, because we had to be available for GP problems anyway.
-
Since the PCT took over responsibility for out of hours GP services this is no longer possible, but we have negotiated with the Scarborough General Hospital Acute Trust to maintain medical (doctor) cover until 11pm weekday nights and weekend and public holiday mornings. Outside these hours the hospital is nurse led with emergency cover from Primecare. This service is less than what we were previously able to provide, but has ensured that there is a service in Whitby, unlike a number of other areas in the country where community hospitals have faced closure following PCTs taking over responsibility for out of hours services.
